"MALE PREGNANCY": HOW IT WORKS

The concept of "male pregnancy" may appear to be a paradoxical idea - one that defies the natural order of things. After all, the male anatomy is not typically designed to carry a fetus to term. However, despite this physiological limitation, the phenomenon of male pregnancy persists. Surprisingly, the condition of male pregnancy is not solely a physical experience but has deep psychological roots.

Men who are expecting a child with their partners may also experience symptoms associated with pregnancy, such as nausea, weight gain, and mood swings. These symptoms may be linked to certain physiological processes that occur in the female body during pregnancy. Women produce a large amount of hormones, particularly cortisol and estrodiol, which play a vital role in the development of the fetus. After birth, these hormone levels decline dramatically. However, research conducted by Canadian scientists found that some men who were expecting a child also exhibited changes in their hormonal balance during pregnancy. Specifically, cortisol, prolactin, and testosterone levels increased in these men, though not to the same extent as in women. Furthermore, many men also experienced symptoms that are characteristic of pregnancy, albeit to a lesser degree than their partners.

This phenomenon has been given the name "Couvade Syndrome." The term "Couvade" originates from the French verb "couve," which means "to hatch chicks." This syndrome refers to a set of psychogenic and psychosomatic disorders that young men experience when their wives are pregnant. Essentially, the symptoms that men experience are a reflection of what their pregnant wives are experiencing. For instance, if a woman's appetite and eating behavior changes during pregnancy, her husband may suffer similar symptoms. The husband may feel the same painful sensations that his wife feels, such as pelvic bone separation. In some cases, men may even develop a "pregnant belly" due to increased fat deposits or a decrease in abdominal muscle tonus.

It is also possible for Couvade Syndrome to manifest only during childbirth. For example, men may experience lower abdominal pain similar to labor pains, and they may even be mistakenly diagnosed with appendicitis. The root cause of Couvade Syndrome is believed to be unconscious anxiety for the fate of the wife and the child, as well as a sense of guilt towards the wife. Some psychoanalysts suggest that a false pregnancy in men is often a manifestation of his identification with his mother, an attempt to make up for his guilt towards her.

Couvade Syndrome is also associated with a similar ritual among certain ethnic groups, in which the husband lies in bed during his wife's labor, refusing to eat and shouting while imitating labor pains. In some cases, the pain is so intense that men are taken to the operating table, suspected of having appendicitis. Medieval sorceresses often used this ritual to transfer the wife's pain to her husband, and as a result, they were often accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake.

According to foreign studies, 11% of men of childbearing age experienced some degree of Couvade Syndrome during their wives' pregnancy, which means that one in nine future fathers may experience this condition. Additionally, individual symptoms of Couvade Syndrome, such as abdominal pain, are even more common, with 40% of men with pregnant wives in the United States experiencing this variant.

While Couvade Syndrome may not be a physical disorder, it is still considered a pathology that requires treatment. Experts recommend psychotherapy and the use of sedatives to help manage symptoms associated with this condition. Ultimately, understanding the complex psychological and physiological aspects of male pregnancy and Couvade Syndrome can help us better understand the experience of both parents during pregnancy and childbirth.
