"BEAUTY REQUIRES SACRIFICE"

An In-Depth Exploration into the Pervasive Pain of Female Beauty Rituals

Many prepubescent girls are endowed with luscious locks that demand a great deal of maintenance and care. Their mothers, frantically braiding their hair in a haste to get them to school on time, inadvertently tug and pull at the hair. Consequently, these girls are predisposed to a life of enduring physical pain. As they mature, they are coerced into undergoing excruciating procedures to remove unwanted hair from their bodies, and to gingerly tread in high heels, among other things, all in the name of beauty. Enduring such agonizing experiences is often dismissed with platitudes such as "beauty requires sacrifice" or "endure, Cossack, you'll be an ataman!" What then, could be the root cause of this ubiquitous affliction?

In a patriarchal society, women are objectified, relegated to a mere ornamental function that serves to satisfy the needs of men and to underscore the social standing of their male partners or spouses through their physical appearance. The notion that "a girl should be beautiful" is a social construct that imposes upon them the onus of strictly adhering to various grueling, not to mention costly, beauty regimens, which result in them tacitly accepting the pain that invariably accompanies them. Seldom do they question why they should suffer or the necessity of the pain they endure.

The topic of women enduring pain in the pursuit of beauty is a complex and multifaceted issue. The root causes of this phenomenon can be traced back to patriarchal power structures that place women in a decorative role, objectifying them and defining their worth through their appearance. One striking example of this is the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding, which was designed to make women's feet smaller and more "graceful" in order to elevate their status in the marriage market. This practice was deeply eroticized, with men believing that bandaged feet provided a more pleasurable sexual experience.

Although foot binding is an extreme example, the underlying logic remains the same: women are encouraged to pursue beauty at any cost in order to increase their desirability to men. This mindset is instilled in girls from a young age, so that they learn to accept pain and discomfort as normal and necessary. This normalization of pain has far-reaching consequences, as women are more likely to tolerate pain and delay seeking medical attention when they do experience discomfort. Moreover, doctors are more likely to dismiss women's complaints of pain, attributing them to emotional or psychological factors rather than taking them seriously.

In order to address the problem of women enduring pain, it is necessary to recognize and challenge the societal norms that promote this behavior. Girls must be taught that their worth is not defined by their appearance, and that they have the right to prioritize their own well-being and comfort. At the same time, doctors and medical professionals must be educated about the ways in which gender bias can impact their treatment of female patients. By working to shift cultural attitudes and improve medical care for women, we can begin to break the cycle of pain and objectification that has long been associated with female beauty.
